In the Brooder

We had a predator attack when we weren’t home yesterday. Our flock free ranges. When we got home, we noticed one of our roosters was missing a bunch of feathers, which prompted a headcount and we learned a hen was taken. We checked over our rooster and didn’t notice any injuries other than a large patch of feathers missing. Fast forward 24 hours and another check to discover his injuries were more extensive than we thought. He has a vent injury. I will clean the area with hebiclens and spray with Vetericyn. What else can we do for him? I have since locked up our flock in our run and will do so for the next few days to deter the assailant(s) when they return to try again.

Watch him for fly strike and don't let the hens peck him.
Thank you for your advice. After cleaning him up and applying a salve, we have segregated him in large dog crate in our run. It’s normally our brooder, but we just integrated our latest batch of chicks and keets with the main flock. So I’m thankful it’s available now for him! We will clean it and reapply the salve a few times a day until it’s cleared up. How long should we segregate him for?

Clean and apply ointment twice a day. And return him to the flock when he's no longer red and raw, at which point he'll be safe from pecking by the others. If he's where the others can see him, reintegrating him should not be a problem.

Sounds good and he is still with the flock, just in a separate pen in their run. Thank you
