I have a 16 month RIR hen that is continually holding her tail in the down position since Tuesday Jan 10th. I gave her a good going over and palpated pain around the base of her tail. She is eating/drinking/laying and was socializing normally until this morning I found her separating. She is not off balance, other than not having her rudder…. She did do a soft molt in fall and still has a few feathers coming out. But this seems more of a deep injury. Is there anything I can do for her pain? Thank you in advance for your input.

Hopefully everything is okay. that might mean she has an egg inside she cant get out some people say to keep them in a quite place and soak them to help the egg come out.

I am not an expert, but when I have a sick chicken with a reproductive disorder or who is sick, they usually have a tail pointing down. Can you feel of her crop, especially early in the morning when it would normally be empty, to see if it is empty, full, firm, doughy, or puffy? Can you insert a clean finger into her vent 2 inches to feel for a stuck egg? Lastly, can you examine her lower belly between her legs to see if it is enlarged, full, or tight? Look her over for lice and mites on her skin under her vent and belly. What do her poops look like?
