Since we ended up with no roos out of our 30 sexed pullets, we ended up buying 2 EE roos last week. They are a week old today. We also have 6 3 week old bantams (straight run). We are leaving on vacation for a week on Saturday. Our neighbor is coming every day (maybe even twice) to take care of all our chickens.

Our two roos are in a smallish brooder box with their own brooder lamp. The bantams are in a huge converted dog crate with their own lamp. I think it is a good idea to get them in the same box before we go because it will allow plenty of room for our roos and it will be easier for our neighbor. The brooder is in our sealed 4 car garage. I figured I would adjust the heat to about 75/80, which is a little cool for our roos and a little warm for our bantams. But like I said, the dog crate is huge (it once housed our Mastiff with plenty of room) and both sets of birds should be able to find an area they are comfortable with.

First off, does that heat sound ok? We are dipping down to about 55/65 at night and we are in the mid to upper 70's during the day.

I did put the roos in the bantams box just a little bit ago and they looked extremely scared. Out of our 6 bantams, I have been sure that our white silkie is a roo. He has been dominant of the 6 since the day we brought him home. But, when we put the roos in there, it was our seabright that was the most ticked. He/she kept eye-balling them and stood in this upright position with it's head all sticking up and it's tail all perky. Then our seabright charged our roos. She/he didn't really hurt them, but we certainly very aggressive toward them. Our white silkie seems ok with them in there although he is pretty interested in their presence. The other 4 bantams already seem to be fine with the 2 roos.

What do you guys think? Will the seabright just get over it? Is it ok to have them all in there together?

Thanks!

Julie

Edited to Add: Size wise, our roos are bigger than all the bantams, except the white silkie.

Just watch them close and play referee, Trouble makers might need to go in time out.
