I am interested in getting a few goats including a milk goat. When I am looking at milk goats I keep seeing the word freshen. So does this mean that the goat has recently kidded? Are there certain breeds that milk or can Any goat that has had a kid can be milked? Any information or experience greatly appreciated.

Freshening means giving birth. Any goat can be milked after it has kidded (or freshened) but some goats give a lot more milk than others. For instance, Boers are bred for meat and they will not produce as much milk as a dairy goat. First thing I suggest you do in to go on amazon.com and order Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats. The second thing I think you should do is to go onto www.caprinesupply.com and ask for a catalog. Not only is there a wide variety of goat books and supplies listed, the catalog itself is packed with good information.
