My uncle sent me this article, and I thought I'd share it. I know a lot of people would disagree with the point of this article, and others are like me and can see the point from both sides . . . though I tend to be a skeptic when it comes to organic methods. I think it's well written and thought provoking no matter what you believe. Personally, I think I'd die of depression if I had to work in the big egg industry. I'd probably be stuffing chickens under my shirt to take home . . . but then, I have a soft spot for poultry. Oh well. My chickens, at least, are spoiled silly during their useful lifetime, so I'll content myself with that.

This article is innacurate. You want to know how I figured that out so quickly?

Weasels were a problem, but not as much a threat as one of our typically violent early summer thunderstorms. It seems that turkeys, at least young ones, are not smart enough to come in out of the rain, and will stand outside in a downpour, with beaks open and eyes skyward, until they drown. One night Niemann lost 4,000 turkeys to drowning, along with his dream, and his farm.

Ask anyone in here, turkey do not drowned because they look up in the rain. They may have chilled, but they did not drowned because they continued to look up. Sorry, but the moment I read this portion, I stopped reading.

I saw that, too, but his point is still valid . . . either way they died because they didn't come out of the rain. They certainly are too stupid to seek shelter. Poor things. I know it's a common myth amongst farmers, though, and I can forgive the author because it appears he's going off of what his neighbor told him happened. His expertise seems to lie in other areas of farming. It's still an article worth reading, and you might find it not as inaccurate as you thought. Or maybe you will. Either way, it's certainly better thought out than the knee-jerk reaction of "Keep out of our business, you nutty hippies!"
