Believe me, the mama bear wasn't too far behind. She never just goes away and leaves her cubs. I've done so much research on them since we would basically be living side by side with them. I lived in a city in NY and we occasionally had bears and even moose walking down one of the busiest streets there was. Its a fact of life.

One of the differences with black bears too is that "playing dead" won't work with them. From the research that I've done, it says that grizzles will go away but black bears won't. Also black bears are more agile and more able to do things like climb trees than grizzles so climbing a tree to get away from them won't work.

Black bears get acclimated to humans because humans, unfortunately, will leave food outside available for them to get to. They will come right up to someone's home to take garbage and raid gardens.

A friend of mine in SW NY had a black bear break down a wooden door into their home while they were away 2 months ago. One of their dogs was killed and the bear helped himself to tons of food that was in their pantry. When they came home the next day, they came home to a huge mess and a dead dog. The next day they had a reinforced steel door put in.

I just lost another neighbor to a bear, did it kill him, no. But it did tear up his house. About 2 this morning I was awoken to what sounded let world wa 3 starting. I went out on the deck and heard the screaming and knew a bear had gotten in a house. Knowing what house it was, I put some clothes on and went over there. Will you read about this attack, probably not. But they will be packing in the morning, if they have not started already.
A mama bear and five cubs got in the house and did tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Plus all the bullet holes in the house. I didn't count the number of holes, but I would guess at least a 100. You figure Father, Mother and 3 teenagers firing wildly at every little noise. It is amircle theydidn't kill each other. They killed 3 of the cubs and wound the other 3 bears from the looks of the blood.
Now instead of going to work in the morning, I will go hunting. These bear need to be found and put down. A wounded aniamal of any kind is much more dangerous than a healthy animal.
Mama bear will be back looking for her cubs.
So because of someone not keeping their area clean, 6 bear will die. I had always said kill it don't wound it.
I have lived on a mining claim for years and never had a major problem with a bear, for the last 28 years, I have lived on the canyon right above the American River. We would see bear and every other type of wild life all the time. None was a real problem. It was thier home also.
Then the boomers started moving in. Nothing against them except they brought their city ways with them. They either learn to clean up their messes or they get attacked and move back to the city.
With the number of bear today, culling(hunting)
is the only answer. Anyone not believing this should see first hand the damage done by a bear in a house.
For those that think a bear can't do any damge to a house should look at the trach container the government builds for the national parks. A bear can open your car without a key faster than you can with a key.
Darn the law once a bear comes a lookin. It crossed the line then. The only answer at that time is SSS.
