My grandparents had a sheep ranch out in west Texas (Santa Anna, Texas to be specific). Lived there from around 1920-1990. Anyway, my parents gifted them ONE PAIR of standard green/blue peafowl in 1954 for their anniversary. Peafowl got no 'extra' care. Were turned loose on the ranch. Out of those 2 beginning peafowl grew a humongous flock of them--approximately 150-200 in their prime. Guess they really liked the west Texas climate! Anyway, their favorite roosting spot was a big old dead treetrunk (huge!) right next to the main house. My cousin and I found it great fun after dark to go throw rocks into the tree to set the whole flock off calling "help! help!" and Grandma would come running out flapping her dishtowel and yelling at us kids to "leave the peacocks alone!" They lived 3 miles out of town and the people in town would hear those peacocks go off! Fun times! Oh Grandma also did flower arrangements for a while and always collected the peafowl feathers for the arrangements.
