Interesting You Tube Find

This event looks amazing!
Never seen anything quite like this display.
I know those are pigeons "NOT HOMERS" just can not seem to pigeon hole (no pun intended) what breed of bird they are flying. Like you I am wondering how they capture the flock after the fly? Thank you for sharing even though I am puzzled.

I may be able to shed some light on this . This is happening in Northern India, somewhere around New Delhi. The peeps are big into pigeon related activities in that area. Not sure if it is a contest, or just an exhibition show.:idunno
My thinking of how they do it is,,,,,,,, All those pigeon keepers bring their pigeons to event HUNGRY. They release their flocks onto the red perimeter area that contains food. They then chase them away, as can be seen in the video. Pigeons all fly away, but still have the food in mind. Pigeons are trained to recognize signs like the high pitched whistling that can be heard ,,, to return. The always return to RED area where there is food scattered, and added. Again they land and can be seen they are ACTIVELY picking food off the red surface. This goes on for a few cycles.
When event is finished, the red tarps are removed, and pigeons return to their own lofts.

Simple facts about trained pigeons.
Rollers are trained to return to a KIT in the flying area. High Flyers, are also trainable to fly in a certain area for long periods of time.

If ALL those pigeons are from same town, they will have no problem finding their nearby homes.
I got a pix capture from another video by same person. Here it is.

They look like High Flyers to me. I don't think rollers are very common in that area. :idunno
Watching the pigeons fly,,,,,, rollers would have done some acrobatics for sure.

Wow.. thanks for the great reply. When I see these kind of events and the colours, patterns and flying abilities of the pigeons there, plus the number of pigeon fanciers, it makes me want to go and live in India... but too hard for me to get the visa LOL. (love the food there too).
