We are building a 8X16' and 6 feet high Coop that will be shared half for 25 heavy chicks and the other half for 5 bronze Turkeys. We are very new to this whole bit and are racking our brains for some answers

Wanting to know a few things:

1: Is this big enough? The chicks are RIR and BR's all (but 4 roos) are hens, so planning for the proper amount of perches and nesting boxes is eluding our brains. So how many and how big should the nesting boxes be?

2: If taking the 8X16 coop and sharing it among the 2 groups even a good size or will we need to make it bigger? They will be seperated by a wall. Each group having their own outdoor roaming space of 36 X 21

All but 2 of the turkeys will be used for meat consumption.

Our chickens are for eggs

I have an 8x16 building. I put a wall on each end for two 5x8 pens. In the middle of the 16-foot wall is my walkway from the double doors with a pen that is about 3x5 now holding 6 half-grown chicks. It is divided to have a pen on top of it for broodies.

I keep a BR turkey trio in one 5x8 end. They have a small run, and it is barely enough room for them. In the other end I have a young tom with 4 full-grown chicken hens. They do well in the space with a fairly large run.

I think you'll be tight on space. Chicks grown quickly. But it will depend a lot on how your arrange the pens and floor space.

It is usually recommend that you have 4 square feet indoors for full-grown chickens. I'm not sure the recommend indoor space on turkey, but I'd probably go 10 square feet for their bigger bodies and wing span.

Hey Jeannie :

Your nieghbor AL say's you have to plan for their growth and possibly other chickens, the turkey's will need more room for sure. Nest boxes for chickens (LF) should be at least 13"X13" or bigger, placed at least 18"-24" of the ground with Roost's above them so they don't roost in the nest boxes. Easy access to both pens will help you with the chores, it helps to think long and hard before you start and build your pen's so they can be added onto easily later on.
