Hi all! Haven't posted in ages but logged back in to get your expert opinion on a weird problem I haven't had before. I have a broody hen who, for the past two mornings, has had foamy bubbles in the corner of her right eye. Last year when she also went broody, someone else apparently got tired of her antics in the nest and beat her up pretty good- she got pecked in this eye and the bottom part of the eyelid tore a little, healing into what looks like a "skin tag" a person might get. So she's got this weird little flap of skin that pokes up and blocks her vision a bit, but otherwise it's never really bothered her.
So yesterday when I saw the foamy eye, I wondered if she hadn't been pecked in the eye again (just started trying to sit a couple of days ago). I burritoed-her up and flushed it, and pretty quickly saw she had a piece of straw and some other gunk trapped behind the little skin tag. It was no longer bubbly at that time. I wondered if maybe it was trying to get infected, so applied a good dab of terramyin ointment in it.
This morning, bubby eye was back again and looking a little swollen on that side of face.
Had to run to an appointment first thing this morning so I wasn't able to flush and reapply ointment until after lunch. But when I grabbed her (so easy to do when they're velcroed to the nest
) the eye was no longer bubbly and face wasn't swollen. I applied some terramycin anyway. And will recheck/reapply tonight before bed.
Should also say, I don't think there are other signs of respiratory distress- no wheezing, no discharge in other eye or nostril, no sneezing or gasping.
I guess my question is- has anyone ever seen a bubbly eye that seems to come on over night and resolve on it's own throughout the day?
I'm fortunate in that my ~8 years of having chickens, I haven't yet had a serious respiratory infection to deal with, so maybe this is how it starts and I should go get Tylan or something else to try to get ahead of it. Am fortunate that I do also have a small animal vet nearby who will see chickens, and am willing to take one in if it helps protect the rest of the flock.
Anyone have suggestions of what they'd do in this situation?
