Hi my name is Chicken Lady with Attitude and Im not a native MN but nonetheless in frigid Minnesota. I have loved raising chickens for about 10 years and now have about 50. 2 guineas, and about 23 ducks (Heinz 57). My chickens are araucanas and lay pink, brown, blue and green eggs. I have an organic place and feed only organic food to them. But when they are free roaming in the spring and summer they eat snails, and bugs etc etc. They have what I call the Chick Inn the only thing it needs is a hot tub!!
I found out about BYC when I was surfing the net trying to find out what to do with too many roosters and not kill them. Currently I have them (all 15) in a bachelor pad and they have decided who is Alpha. The problem is that organic food is really costly and they eat lots. So what to do??? In the past I have given them away in the hopes that they were not dinner. Friends say to take them to an auction. But they WILL be dinner then A dilemma.
Some of my hobbies are ballroom dancing, organic gardening, and writing, but Im currently in a PhD program in Womens Studies so cant devote too much time to anything other than the chicks. I have 6 cats, and just lost 2 dogs this past year leaving me with one. Since I only sell the organic eggs, and dont kill the chicks for any reason, they are wonderfully content. Some of the hens I have are 6 years old. Its the lifestyle!!! My daughter is in college and I am usually chained to this mach
