I’m semi retired and have been interested in getting laying hens for some time. Now that I’m in the country, I may use moms old chicken coop to house them. I wasn’t clear on what happens to old retired layers, but now I know they do pass away. The method described here was very touching and humane. Not sure I can do it. Just losing a dog is hard enough. I recall my dad never ate his cows. He’d trade the adults for a new calf to raise. When it was full grown and ready to eat, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. They just got into the trailer and went away. They were basically pets as he provided them a pole barn and would often swat the pesky flies off of them. Of course they all had names.
I was encouraged by a TV episode of Farm to Table with Nina, where she showed how much work is involved with chicks and the rewards. I think I’m ready. So bring on the chicks!

Aloha Steve, Welcome to BYC and (almost) chicken keeping!
Sounds like you have some good memories of some good people, also your new flock will be a very lucky flock.
Looking forward to seeing you around the site.
I have a Batman also! So had to check in and say hello from one crime fighting super hero to another
