(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am "fairly" new to having chickens. My husband and I got 4 chicks this past January and have added to them throughout the year. He has raised them his whole life as his parents have always had them.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
13 (12 hens and a rooster)

(3) What breeds do you have?
(What they really are and what we call them are in parentheses lol)

1 Leghorn (white girl)
2 blue splash marans (speckleds)
1 copper maran (Juice- he is our rooster)
3 Orpingtons (fat yellow/skinny yellow/grey girl)
2 Rhode island reds (little original red/big red)
Olive egger (fat neck)
Sicilian (Buttercup)
2 Australorp (skinny black/fat black girl)

We have lost 3 throughout the year, 2 hens and a rooster. 2 have been caught by a fox and a coyote got one of our 2 roosters. We have managed to keep all 4 of the original girls that we started with in January, so when we talk about them, we call them the OG's (original girls)

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Everything except all the poop!! But my favorite part of the day is opening my patio door and they all come running from every corner of the yard for treats

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My husband and I flip houses in our spare time and I dog sit as well. Every dog I have watched at my house have either been terrified of the girls or they don't even look twice at them, so I've been very fortunate

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 4 kids and 2 dogs, pitbulls to be exact. Everyone that comes over gets the biggest kick out of the 2 dogs playing alongside the girls. Each of my dogs have "saved" my chickens at one point in time. My oldest dog Opie alerted us to a stray dog that was trying to get at the chickens and my youngest dog Tig chased off a fox. They are just as much the humans chickens as they are my dogs chickens

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I ran across BYC when I was looking for coop ideas. We are going to build a new coop soon and got some amazing ideas from this site!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Yeah, chickens sure do love to poop. But the love they offer, the affection they give usually out weighs the poo that can stretch for miles and miles. :lau

Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours! :)
