I have wanted to have backyard chickens for many years, and finally the time is right. Husband approves, coop acquired, varieties I wanted mostly available. I got them at 3 days old and today they are 3 weeks. I have 4 chickens (maximum allowed in the city), a Rhode Island Red, a Buff Orpington, a Golden Sex Link, and and Easter Egger. I wanted Ameraucaunas, but I couldn't find any locally. Although my husband argues the "cost-benefit analysis" does not support backyard chickens, my main purpose is to give 4 chickens a very good life, and enjoy fresh eggs as a bonus. Besides, he hasn't seen them turn the compost yet. He may change his mind! We have sort of a regenerative farm going on back here, with veg, fruit trees, cover crops (to sequester carbon and retain soil moisture and support the native bees. My daughter has had several assignments for high school that have lead to research that piqued our interest in regenerative farming and "re-wilding the backyard" as a means of combatting climate change. We have one female dog who needs to retrain as a shepherd. I have two adult sons who are happy to see me finally get my wish of becoming a chicken lady. I've just learned about BYC, because whenever I ask Google one of my chicken questions, you seem to have the answer!
