oh because ducks do not fare well without at least one more duck in their life. they are a “flock animal”
Ducks and Chickens can tolerate each other but they don’t communicate the same ways. they speak different languages and use different body language too. A lone duck = a lonely duck , and can become depressed and poor health can follow.
i hope hope you can get at least one more duck

I have read about ducks needing lots of companionship! I looked into it and also read that ducks do really well with chickens and if they get lots of human attention they also do well. Luckily my duck has both! I plan on making it an indoor duck. Maybe I will go get another duck at some point, but for now I will see how it fairs with me as its main companion!

I used to have just one dog. Man's best friend. I thought I was fulfilling all her needs and she was as happy as she could be. For 8 years it was my husband and I, her and 2 cats. Then I got a second dog. What a change! She was truly HAPPY! I have always had at least 2 dogs since.
No matter how close you are to an animal, if it is a flock or pack creature, it will only ever truly THRIVE when in the company of its own kind.
You simply cannot provide everything to your duck that another duck can. It's impossible. Reconsider getting the second duck now. You, too, will enjoy the experience much more watching them interact with one another.

I have 5 hens, 3 chicks (about a month old), and a duck (also about a month old). I have spent time on this site before trying to find answers to my chicken-related questions, and I thought I'd finally go ahead and make an account. I'm looking forward to talking with fellow bird-brained people like myself.

Trust me. I would LOVE to have a second duck. I'm not completely sure it's in the cards right now, though. I'm right there with you. The main issue is I'm about to move to NC from MS to work on a movie set and I'm not sure that I can bring one duck, let alone two, with me. This means it would likely live in my parents' chicken coop with the chickens for a few months.

The duck was also a birthday present from my parents so it's not like I was being irresponsible.

Now that I think about it, I have some neighbors with ducks, so when I move I can let it stay with them for a while. It'd love that and it would get to be around ducks all the time. I just want to make sure I can identify it when it's time to get it back!
