Hi,

We have 9 4-5 week old chicks snoozing in the laundry room after their big day out in their chicken tractor. I take them out in the morning and in in the evening. We are first time chicken parents.

We have 1 buff orpington, 2 RIR, 2 California Greys, and 4 Polish Crested (two pale and two B&W). We are surprised at how often we find them sorted out by type. How do they know what variety they are in order to find their pal? And what about that poor lonely buff orpington?

Best,

Suzanne

Funny you should observe that at such a young age but I still see them segregate at 2 years of age. I only have 10 hens, 6 of them Barred Rocks and the other 4 Rhode Island Reds...I never ever have them wandering the yard when they are out of their pen that the Rocks are not in the same 6 feet of one another and the Reds are not off in their own group...they do seem to prefer their own breed for company...so yes, find yourself another buff if possible. Good luck and welcome to the forum, you'll feel right at home here in no time and learn everything you can ask about chickens too!
