Our set up is that the hens are brooding the chicks. We have three Mama's with 4 chicks each. The older chicks are free with their Mama in the coop, 10X10 ft, the next oldest group are separated in a "box" about 2 1/2 X 4 ft. The youngest hatched last week, are in a 30X20in plastic semi clear box. What I would like to do is move the next oldest in with the oldest. Give the "box" to the youngest. Getting rid of the plastic box.

The Mama's have been coop mates for close to a year.

Should we do this at night? All the big chickens come in for the night as well and seem to do well with the ones who are loose already.

Another question is: When can we let them out in the run. It is pretty much dirt.

Looking forward to all of your wisdom.

You could probably put the next group in the coop with the first mama. The only problem I forsee is confusion for the chicks and one mama stealing babies from the other.
