(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I grew up in the country and had chickens as a child. I am the biggest advocate of animals-- if they all could live in the house and fit in my bed, I would! But as an adult, I just got my first group of chickens from a friend with a farm. She was given a Blue Orphington because she wouldn't lay and she put her in with her Rhode Island Red rooster and she sat on 7 babies. I got 4 girls out that batch and 1 rooster. I thought the rooster was a fat hen, so he got to stay and then he ended up being Big Merle and I fell in love and now can't let him go. So, I have had them since January 2018 and they started laying in late April. My beautiful hens are blue with red neck and heads and one is solid black. They are all named after the greats-- country music legends; Merle "Haggard" (the rooster), June (Carter Cash), Dolly (Parton), Mini (Pearl.. spelled different because she was a runt) and Patsy (Cline). I recently got 4 more Rhone Island Red babies (2 weeks old when I got them) and they are now already integrated with the flock and doing great. They are 12 weeks old now. So, I have 9 total and the little reds (as i call them) are awaiting their names.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 8 hens and 1 rooster
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have 5 Blue Orphington/Rhode Island mixes (including the rooster) and 4 Rhone Island Red hens
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
A friend of mine told me you all were the Bible of Chickens
I have enjoyed reading articles and many of them have helped so much-- for instance, how I integrated my young girls to the flock-- worked like a charm.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love my home and my farm. I am a full time mom and love spending my time educating my daughter on animal care and all things outside in nature. I love to crochet and knit with the wool from our English Angora rabbit and our sheep.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are a sweet little family of 3 with several adopted kids that have fur, wool or feathers. We have a little garden that we love to eat fresh veggies from. We live outside of Nashville, so we do get the culture of the city as well. Our home is our haven, we love our animals and we love raising our daughter knowing the value of hard work and kindness.
