Hi there,
I am a kiwi mother of three (Abi 11, Katie & John nearly 8), and in January this year I had the privilege of buying a home on a quarter acre with established gardens and chook run - complete with four chooks! We already had a cat, and we picked up our new dog from the SPCA on move-in day! Since then we've taken in a fifth chook from a friend, and then recently a chook has come into our yard, and seeing as we have been thus far unsuccessful in finding her owner, it looks like we have a long term guest!
We have also five nice sized aviaries which we've started to fill with four budgies!
I home educate my children, and so having animal and garden care is a great opportunity as a family to learn and have good responsibilities.
We live on the north-west coast of New Zealand. It's called the winterless north here. It does get cold enough for a fire, but frosts are few and it doesn't snow at all. We live between river and see (about 2 minutes drive to the river and about 11 minutes drive to the west to get to the coast).
Our chickens weren't full free-range before we arrived. They had a good sized yard and hen house, but we wanted to see them scratching in leaves and grass, and so delight to see our chooks using the leafy garden beds to scratch around in, and loll about soaking in afternoon sun, and cozy-down in like they're nesting. So far we've only one of the five (Henny, the black and white hen) that likes to secret her eggs away. Mostly they go back to the nesting boxes to lay.
It's good to have this web-site to share and interact over our chook care.
Blessings, Rachael
