We got our first (meat) chickens in 1997 and learned how to process them myself with an antique axe. Educational...but then a few years (and another batch I did myself) later (and after years of raising meat chickens and having them processed anywhere I could-dirty, gross processing places far away, and an Amish farm), a classmate from my high school town opened up a really nice processing place only an hour away.
I've raised egg laying chickens bought on CL and chicks from Tractor Supply since about 2001 or so.
I enjoy watching their interactions, kind of like human society in miniature.
I have known about Backyard Chickens for a very long time and do not post much. My chickens live in a rustic structure we built inside our barn and it is pretty predator proof, a reality about chicken-owning that everyone has to experience along the way.
I have live-trapped and relocated countless chicken killing critters...skunks, raccoons and opossums. It has been fascinating for me, as a behavior study geek, to view these animals up close (well, not the skunks). I do not believe in killing them, as they are only doing what they are born to do.
They do get a free ride to a faraway rural location with woods and no people living around there!
I also have a rare breed of dog (see avatar) and sometimes show them.

Greetings tango,
You are so right...predators are something chicken keepers will have to experience along the way.
