(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm fairly new to chickens. I got my first four chicks May 2021.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Four. The same four mentioned in #1.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Rhode Island Red
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They are so entertaining to watch. I also love gathering eggs and giving eggs to friends and family.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love doing all outdoors activities; crafts such as painting, cross stitch, and beadwork; and taking care of my virtual farm in Stardew Valley!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live in Nebraska, which may be relevant in future posts if talking about the weather. We have extremes of hot and cold temperatures. Need to have hardy birds and proper shelter!
I own a home that came with a chicken coop and run. So I have just had to do basic upgrades like a new roof, insulation, draft prevention, roosting bars, etc.I plan to move in with my boyfriend soon and the first consideration is my chickens being able to move with me! So building a coop and run from scratch in the near future! I would also like to expand my flock a little, the city only allows 7 hens. My boyfriend has two dogs - a pitbull mix and a boxer. I have an all white with a raccoon tail stray cat that hangs around my place. He's a good mouser despite being spoiled by wet food!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
BYC showed up on Google with my frequent panic as a new chick owner. Recently I started browsing more while planning a new coop build so I thought I would join to take advantage of the perks and learn more regularly!
