Hello Forum,

My name is Andrew and I live in Florida. I live with my wife and kids on approx. 2 acres in NWF. I currently serve in the armed forces as a medic. I have been managing a small backyard flock of 4-8 chickens mainly to teach the kids some responsibility and learn where food comes from, as well as, animal care. We also enjoy watching them peck around. Predators and dogs got a mess of them before I figured out how to keep them all safe. I Currently I have 4 birds. The breeds are 3 red sex links and 1 barred rock hen. They have about 600 sq. ft. run next to our pot bellied pig, Mr. Bacon. We also have 3 dogs. I am happy to share what i have learned and hope to learn a great deal more form the community. Thanks.

Thank you sincerely for your time in service Andrew. Glad you joined the Backyard Chickens flock. You have some good layers, they should be keeping the family well stocked with fresh eggs.

You may want to join your state thread. Good chance there are other Bycers around you.
Just put state name in the search box and hopefully it will come up.:yesss:

Thanks,
Yes, they seem to lay pretty regularly. I am managing a sick bird right now. :( I will look at the state forum and some of the other forums for some insight as to what might be going on. I did deal with Avian Pox a few years ago. Thankfully this isn't the case this. time. Glad to serve and be able to be a part of something greater than myself. Look forward to future chicken chats.

:welcome
Glad to have you join us on BYC! Drumstick Diva said it best....THANK YOU! For your service. Glad to see another member of the healthcare community on here as well! Many of us are RN's and many have also served in the military. I haven't figured out if that's a predisposition to having chickens.

That's funny cause alot of the medics I work with also have an interest in or end up owning chickens. Maybe we are predisposed to having chickens. Lol. Nice to meet you.
