Hello Everyone!!

I moved to Gilbert AZ in 2015. When we first got the property my husband bought some chickens but unfortunately the new neighbors dog managed to get into our property and well you can probably guess the end of that story. My husband was very upset so not knowing anything about chickens I went and bought him more. Now I am in love, I never thought chickens can have so many personalities and so smart. We live on 2.5 acres and my husband just finished the new coop with air- conditioning because the summer here are just to brutal for them and we figured its the best way to keep them safe from the heat. I currently have Cochin, Bantams, Silkies. Polish and a not sure what breed but its a meat chicken? They sold him to us by mistake but we are making every effort to keep him at a low weight so his heart can support his body. He is adorable when he runs.... anyway I am not sure what my next step is on this site but we do have a hawk problem any ideas on how to keep them safe. My dogs try to chase them away but they can only do so much. Thank you all for taking the time to read this.

Hello and :welcome to help keep your birds cool you can also provide them with a dust bath, this also helps to keep them parasite free. If your mystery bird is very large and white with a very big breast then it is likely a Cornish roaster or Cornish cross, many hatcheries and feed stores have different names for there meat birds but almost all of them are just cornish hybrids.

Howdy:welcome:frow Happy :yato have you join the family. Enjoy your time here at BYC! :)
@sourland has given sound advice. Also, the perimeter of your enclosure/ run should be re-enforced to protect your birds from ground predators. If you have resident hawks, it would be best not to free range.

Hello Milan, and welcome to BYC! Great to have you here!

We have bald eagles, hawks, and owls around here. I don't know if we've just been lucky, but we've yet to lose a chicken to a raptor in eight years. Raccoons and possums, yes, but not to the big birds.

There was one time, in the middle of the afternoon, when an eagle dropped into the chicken run and hit one of the hens. My wife just happened to be looking out the window, and the crazy woman went running outside toward the eagle perched on the hen. I don't know what she thought she was going to do when she to the eagle! Fortunately, the eagle, took one look at her and decided he didn't want any of that, so he took off. The hen stood up, shook it off, and wandered off toward the coop. Word must have spread among the eagles that a crazy woman lives at that house.

Crazed women sceaming and running at raptors are the best defense. Very exhausting for the women however. Help her out by keeping your birds in a safe, run with top. A solid top can also provide shelter from the elements and some shade . As for other preds run electrified fencing around the perimeter of coop and run.

G’Day from down under AZMilan13 :frow Welcome!

I note you mention you are from AZ, but if you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. One in particular which might interest you is:
