Hello, I just wanted to take a brief moment to introduce myself and my flock to the group. I started my flock a year ago and have found many useful answers on this page so decided to join so I could share as well. I have 7 girls 4 buff orphangtons *sic* 1 black sex lynk and 2 no clues. I built "coup ma'haul" for my girls because as an animal lover I also have 4 doggo's who's passion for the chickens border on the edge of dinner bells. Of my 7 girls only one so far has gone broody on me, Chicky'Tiny has done this twice and this time when she came out of it she is mysteriously laying eggs with shells so thin it is more like a membrane only egg, not sure how she got that out without breaking it, the first one did get broken and subsequently eaten, no-no please don't start eating my fresh eggs!! I have oyster shell for them and give them layer crumbles with a seaweed vitamin boost so I need advice on what else I can do to harden up her shells. Thanks so much for the add and the advice.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

There are lots of reasons why a hen doesn't put on a shell. She could have a defective shell gland or for some reason she is not absorbing the calcium. If the mix of phosphorus and magnesium is not correct, they can't use the calcium absorbed. Even stress and bullying can effect the quality of a shell.

All this said, I have had luck using human Caltrate, 1/2 a pill daily. Powder the 1/2 pill and mix it in 1 ml of baby food or apple sauce, load into a syringe (no needle) and squeeze this under or in front of the tongue. If you start to notice too many calcium bumps on the egg, back down to every other day or so. This may or may not fix your girls issue, but its worth a try. This issue can turn your flock into egg eaters.

Good luck and welcome to our community! :)

Hi and welcome to our community. Good luck with your girl!

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 (there's a guide on how to include your location under your avatar - including your location is very helpful). You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
