Hello BYC friends,

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? My family is new to raising chickens. Just decided a few weeks ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? No chickens right now. Looking to start with 10-12 hens and a rooster.
(3) What breeds do you have? Going to get Mottled Javas.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? We know where are eggs/chicken is coming from.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We are also beekeepers.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. The family lives on 6 acres in northern Mississippi, mostly trees. Have been thinking about raising chickens for several years.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Discovered BYC during web searches for chicken/coop information. Decided to join the BYC community as a way of talking to others who raise chickens.

We did a bit of research and thought the Javas would be a good bird to start with and should meet our needs. If things go well, we may look at other birds next year. Got a great deal on a prefabbed wood shed that will be converted. Still waiting on some building materials. Will start build coop in a couple of weeks.

Hi! Welcome to BYC! You are going about the coop right! A converted shed works really well. There are so many of those in the Coop Design forum. @DobieLover has a great article on the one she converted. It's large, but could be scaled to the size of yours easily.

You know, goats are great at clearing brush, and the milk is handy too.
