Hello all!
Excited to formally join this community!
My wife and I purchased 5 acres in southwest Ohio about 4 years ago. We have 4 children, 2 dogs, 2 cats, a map turtle, and various other critters.
I’ve been focusing on slowly developing our lawn area (about 3/4 acre) into a food forest, along with another acre or so of forest edge area.
In 2017, we got our first flock of birds - 12 chickens of various breeds, and a turkey. We (and our kids) absolutely loved having them. Several were culled by predators over a period of months. We ate the turkey and a few of the chickens in 2018, and decided to hold off on getting more until I build a bigger and better coop. We lost our remaining 5 chickens while on vacation (a family of raccoons discovered them and they were gone within 2 weeks ☹).
We were never sure of all of the breeds, but I’m doing a little more research as we consider getting another flock (as soon as the coop is built).
We loved them for all of the usual reasons; having eggs, free fertilizer and bug control, and of course their individual personalities.
Other hobbies? I’m an avid reader - mostly in the realms of psychology/psychoanalysis, philosophy, ecology, religion/spirituality/mythology. I’m a psychotherapy some days of the week. I play a few instruments (guitar, ukulele, banjo). I’m trying to learn more about woodworking and have been doing a bit of remodeling (walls, floors, tiling, etc.).
Looking forward to being a little more involved in this community, learning and enjoying the process.
