Hi Everyone!

I’m Lisa and I am new to this group. I need as much information as I can gather about raising backyard chickens, particularly in the desert southwest. Summers can reach 113-115 at peak.

I think I’ve got a good spot for a small coop, but I haven’t pulled the trigger just yet. Happy to be here and I hope to learn a lot from you all

Build it open air...with hardware cloth walls.

Good ventilation in the coop, position of the coop, plenty of shade and access to water, and choosing light breeds will get your chooks through the hot summers.

The first thing I would suggest is not to have a small coop! You're going to want something big and very airy. I would have one solid wall against the prevailing winds and the other three walls hardware cloth. When it gets cold you can always cover them with pre-made panels or tarps.
