Hello Everyone,
I'm Randie and this is a bit of my story. Growing up both sets of my grandparents had chickens that I was lucky enough to help with. I didn't own chickens until I moved into my grandparents old farm home with my new little family. A family friend wanted my son to experience growing up with chickens and gave us some from his flock. Unfortunately over time we lost our flock and decided we were not ready and with a new baby didn't have the time to keep them safe and tend to them properly. Fast forward 16 years later, my oldest son really wanted some chickens and purchased 6 baby Buff Orpingtons. Around the same time we ended up with a sassy, spoiled Ancona duckling that was hatched at the school I work at. After a lot of ups and downs in the last 5 years with LIFE, we lost all of our hens but 1 who we call Rosey and we still have our duck Daisy. Rosey and Daisy have become best friends! New chicks and ducks were hatched at the school and I was asked if I would like to take some. So late this spring my boys and I went to our local Tractor Supply and got all the necessary things needed plus 4 chicks to go along with the new babies we were getting from the school. We now have 4 Rhode Island Red pullets along with 2 we are not sure of the breed, 2 new Ancona ducklings plus our older girls Rosey and Daisy. I love getting fresh eggs but I really love sitting outside in the yard watching the girls play and search for bugs. They are quite therapeutic! I have 3 boys with 2 of them still in school and living at home. They are very much teenagers that can drive me crazy sometimes lol but they enjoy our little flock as much as I do and they help me quite a bit with them. We have an old Lab that really wants to be friends with the chickens and ducks and helps scare away stray cats and such that come around, and 2 indoor cats that enjoy laying in the window and watching our feathered friends. Any time I Google a concern it brings be to BYC. BYC seems to always provide great advice when I have a question about my birds whether it be about food, behavior or coop/run design. I could spend hours reading through BYC.
