Good day,
My name is Sharon. I am new to the chicken world. Getting ready to order my chicks. Still trying to decide what is best for us. I am the mom of 4 children, 4 dogs, 5 fish and 2 cats. Soon, we will be adding at least 12 chickens. I also have a husband in there some where too. LOL We are building a 6 x 10 chicken coop and our run will be 10 by 30. I have questions.... Go figure
I want 6 RI reds and 6 barred rocks.
I was wondering can I raise meat chickens with my laying hens?
Do I have enough room to do this?
If I can not how can I raise both?

Hello from Michigan! Whether you can raise your meat birds with your layers depends on what type of meat bird you are thinking about. Meat birds like Cornish Crosses need a specialized diet, where I believe you they can only eat so many hours, then you need to withdraw the feed for so many hours. If you are thinking about using dual purpose breeds you can certainly keep them together.

So I could (because both breeds we are looking at are dual purpose) just order more straight line and process the males? And do I have enough room for that? LOL Sorry, I am just really want to order my chicks.

That is what I do. If you end up having too many males and they start fighting (they really aren't worth processing till 20 weeks and by then all their rooster "qualities" show) you may want to put the roos in a separate pen. Good luck!
