Greetings from Florida! My family and I are new to BYC and sorta new to chickens. My wife and I have a little experience with chickens from family chickens in our youth but as we have read and studied here at BYC we found how much we didn't know.
We picked up our first chicks on Friday, six Ameraucana and six Welsummer chicks. We do not have our coop up yet, but we wanted to get the chicks while they were available. Researching chicken coop ideas was how we found BYC.
We want to enjoy our chickens as well as enjoy the benefits of fresh eggs, meat, and being part of our food source. Also, we see it as a great source of family activity, as our parents always said "Chores build character!"
We live on ten acres and already raise hogs as well as feed the local deer and squirrel population. We are also looking to incorporate a dairy cow or maybe some milking goats but we have to get the chickens situated first. We plan on building our coop in the middle of 3/4 acres that was previously fenced for a garden, we will fence off half of that area and rotate the chickens from side to side to let them range as much as possible and keep some growth up for them to forage. Eventually I would like to feed out some meat birds from time to time, but that is a while in the making (I'm not going to pluck any more chickens until I build a wizbang!
)
This community looks great and we have already learned so much from BYC and look forward to so much more. Thank you to everyone who contributes.
