Hello! My family and I are relatively new to chickens, having got our first flock of chickens back in March pretty abruptly because a family member who had previously had chickens had bought some chicks and ducklings, but found out their city ordinance did not allow them to have backyard chickens. So we got our girls when they were about a month and a half old, but tragedy struck when a possum or coon slipped through our fence and cut our flock down to two Ameraucanas at only 16 weeks. Luckily, we had given our White Pekin ducks to a friend because we just didn't have the space and water for them to be happy, so they are thriving with their new family! This gave us the chance to start over, though, and now we have 10 new baby chicks! They live with us, our seven aquatic fish-friends (Hydra, Spaz, Big Tuna, Zombie, The Shark, Dinosaur, and Little Dinosaur), and our four dogs, who will occasionally tease the chickens through the fence but otherwise are great. We have our two big Ameraucana girls, Jo and Nancy, who are at 16 weeks old, and then our one week old chicks. We have two Blue Plymouth Rocks named Ducky and Spike, two Barred Rocks named Shadowfax and The Black Fires of Mordor (or alternatively, just Mordor), two New Hampshire Reds named Margaret and Lucy, a Cinnamon Queen by the name of Queenie, and finally a White Leghorn who goes by Duchess. Our original flock (along with the Ameraucanas) had two ISA Browns (Joy and Edith), a Rhode Island Red cockerel (Babe Ruth), and a Barred Rock (Nellie), who were all lost to the predator. So far, we love having chickens and are considering expanding our enclosure to give the girls more space. I love raising our flock, and although we haven't gotten to experience any fresh eggs yet, I'm sure that'll be a big perk! I came across BYC trying to learn everything I possibly could about chickens when we found out we would be inheriting our first flock, because I didn't know the first thing about chicken-care, but eventually became involved with the wonderful community in order to learn more and have a great support group.
