Greetings friends!

I am a vegetable and fruit grower who has recently branched out into poultry.

Because my farm dogs (who diligently keep the deer out of my apple orchard) love eating chickens, I've started with some guinea fowl in hopes that they will stand up to the dogs a bit better.

We're mainly apple growers (up here in Maine) but we also do pears and root vegetables as well as a small number of sheep. Can't wait to see some broody guineas turn on our farm dogs and give them what for.
I wish we could grow apples here. Too many cedar trees.
Broody hens are how my dog learned not to mess with the birds!

I would trade my apple trees for eastern white cedar in a heartbeat. If the guineas don't convince the dogs, I'll have to get an emu. That should do the job.
Basically, the dogs think the sheep are dogs. The dogs keep the deer off the apple trees. The guineas keep the bugs off the apples. If the dogs don't eat the guineas, I'll be in pesticide free business. If the dogs do eat the guineas, I'll need to find bigger and meaner birds who get along with the sheep (who eat the fallen apples and keep the bugs and fungus off the trees). If the emu's harm the dogs the deer will eat the trees.... somewhere here there is a balance, I'm still looking for it.
