Hi. My name is Rhonda, and I am 31 years old. I've been raising animals all my life. I've had a veritable menagerie of pets thru the years, but this... this is my first chicken.

According to the people at the feed store, she's a girl and almost 3 weeks old. This is good because as tolerant as my neighbors are, I can't see them being too tolerant of a rooster.

So, I was told she's a "Golden Sextant" but I can't find that breed anywhere online. Does it even exist? She sure looks an awful lot like a Rhode Island Red chick...

The feed store provided me with a feeder, a waterer, and a bag of chick feed. She wasn't eating yesterday so I ground up the chick feed and made it smaller... and then she ate like a champ.

She spends most of her time with me, on my shoulder, in my lap.

I don't even know what to name her. In the running so far are "Peepers", "Rubber", and "Lemon" as well as all female names in the TV Show, CSI or any of it's spin offs.

I made a little "brooder" out of an old aquarium I had laying around and a heating pad set on low under one end of the aquarium. The cage is lined with shredded newspaper and timothy hay. I also have pine shavings available but I know pine can be toxic to some birds so I wanted to talk to someone who knows something about chickens before using it.

She's eating well, pooping well, drinking well... and makes the sweetest little noises, and when I put her back in her brooder she sits and cries for me until she goes to sleep.

I've had her 2 days... I went to another online forum I belong to, where several of the members each have several chickens.. but they haven't answered any of my questions, so here I am... seeking out experts.

This site has been awesome. What little i've learned so far about chickens... I've learned from this site. Thank you!

Rhonda

I started my chicks with paper towels but by 3 weeks I was using the pine shavings. Just make sure you don't use cedar they cause breathing problems.
Cound you post a pic so we can try to help name her?Don't always trust the feed store clerks I think they make stuff up when they don't know what breed the hatchery has sent them.

maybe she would like a friend as chickens are flock birds, Ilike the name Peepers ,then if you get her a friend it could be Cheepers. Check out the raising chicks bit on the main menu, lots of good advice there, have fun with your new friend.

You really think I should get her a friend?

I love the Learning Center and all the information links on the site. I have to admit it's all a bit overwhelming at the moment, but don't worry I'm a fast learner.

I only took her outside for the pictures, she'll be living in the house for a few more weeks...

Oh, is there a way to verify that she is in fact a girl? I've done a few google searches and gotten infomation ranging between "you can't tell" to "you need a special machine" and "certain breeds you can tell by some row of feathers"

I think they meant Golden Sexlink ( rhode Island red rooster with a white rock hen i think...)

She's cute but definitely get her a buddy.

Oh and welcome to BYC!
