When I was at the feed store they had a lot of Iowa Blue chicks in rather crowded conditions. As I was looking at them, I noticed that several chicks had eyes that were swollen and bleeding due to the fact that the others were picking at them. I bought one and was given another one. They are healthy and eating and socializing well except that one each has an eye that is completely swollen shut and almost looks at grotesque. They do not appear to have pus in them. I do not know if they will be blind in one eye but I have to clear up whatever malady this is - I mean you can't even see a slit for an eye at this point

any help will be very much appreciated.

What is an Iowa Blue chick and where can I get a couple.... DOZEN!

Sorry to hear about the chick's eye- I'm not very familiar with eye problems, but someone else might chime in real soon! Good luck!

DISGUSTING!!!!!! I would turn them into animal control. No need for such cruelty. Give me their name and address of the store and I will contact authorities myself.

Wash the eyes out once or twice daily with sterile saline wash. Let set 10 minutes. Treat with terramycin or chloramphenicol ophthalmic (eye) ointment.

How old are the birds?

You're going to want to give them vitamins to encourage ocular and respiratory healing. The target vitamin is A. You could do polyvisol baby vitamins in the beak daily - depending on the age, 2-3 drops in the beak once daily for a week.

Also since all eye problems drain into the digestive tract, I'd give them yogurt daily this week and then every other day for another week, then weekly if they'r ein the "starter/grower" ages.

Use the best age-appropriate crumble you can. Please let us know how they're doing.
