I asked this same question last August and was encouraged to give it a try. So far all has been fine.
I have 10 hens and 2 roos. 5 hens and one roo are 10 months old and then a group of 1 roo and 3 hens that I got in August are now about 6 months old. The older roo is a white rock and the younger is a blue ameraucana who is subordinate. So far they have it all worked out. Like you the younger has his own group of 2-3 girls that run around in the yard together. At night they all mix up on the roost. Of course there is the wild male turkey that makes a point of chasing both roos around the yard each day when I let them out.
