I have a 3 day old chick that was born unable to straighten his right leg and outer toes on each foot were also folded in. Suspected a slipped achilles tendon in the hock joint. Attempted to realign the tendon by gently stretching the leg back as was recommended on the following website (http://sites.google.com/a/larsencreek.com/chicken-orthopedics/leg-braces). I then placed the chick in a chick chair and taped the toes while I was at it. The leg now looks red and inflamed. The chick refuses to eat, will take a bit of water from me. He cries almost constantly, don't know if it's because he's in pain or because he's separated from all his buddies (have a Ziplock freezer bag partition across the brooder, so he can see his buddies and he will snuggle up to the partition to have contact with the chicks on the other side and has plenty of room to get out from under the heat lamp as well). His hock on that side had been scabbed from him constantly being on it. I don't see any pus draining from the hock, continues to look scabbed but can think of no other cause of the redness and swelling. Unless it could just possibly be inflammation from the tendon? Should I try putting triple antibiotic ointment on it? My husband is planning on culling the chick in the morning if he continues to cry and the leg looks worse. CAN THIS CHICK BE SAVED???!!!
