I think it's the aromatics in the shavings and wood that is bad for them. it affects their respiratory systems. i don't think that a live tree would hurt them though. I have used cedar shavings in my ucky wet duck pen before anyway with no problems. they soak up the water better and they made it not smell poopy & ducky. they didn't seem bothered by it at all.
