Is Cracked Corn bad?

Does anyone know whether or not you should feed hens cracked corn in the summer? I've read online that it increases their body temperature. The average temperature each day here is 99 degrees, and I don't want to be feeding them anything that can make them hotter. Thanks in advance!

Corn is a carbohydrate that provides heat energy that you would ideally give in cold weather. I know that the pigeon feed I use during winter includes corn. Pigeon feed that peeps use for racing does not contain corn.( I don't race.) The corn is the last thing that my pigeons eat... It is also the last thing left when I give my chickens scratch or other grain combinations. Being totally sincere. I don't think corn is going to hurt chickens or pigeons . It will not overheat them. They will only eat as much as they need. They will have energy to burn in activity. Nutrition is of course complex. Proteins are body builders. Fats are also needed. Corn is labeled as a good feed but not to be used exclusively. I have read the labels on cracked corn bags . Consider it as a filler food. It is also the least priced grain. You will see that unless your chickens are very hungry, they will not be gobbling up that corn quick.

I feed mine on corn year round they lay great and would recommend feeding roosters corn unless they are in a molt

We really need to put the myth to rest, corn does not raise the birds body temp just like when you eat it you don't run a fever...

Corn is also not a balanced diet, it can be used as part of the birds diet but only in moderation... Like other 'scratch grains' they well tend to gorge on it and skip out on the good food throwing off their dietary balance if offered too much...

Corn can be feed year round with a proper portion. My chickens get corn all year long and they haven't gotten over heated. I just portion it so they don't have way to much than needed. Think of it as your desert to a meal.

I haven't read through the responses, but just wanted to say that corn should be part of the feed, but not a huge amount of the feed, since it is low in protein and they need a mix of different foods. So I feed corn year round- they will eat more grains in winter though, naturally.
