I have 16 chickens. 2 are roosters...one is still quite young. The chickens are a mixture of younger and older girls as well as large and bantum varieties. They are getting along really well. I just want to keep them all happy and healthy. I've never had a mixture like these before. I have alfalfa that has come up where ever there was disturbed soil on my 2 acres. one larger patch and scattered plants here and there. The chickens love it but I want to be sure it is ok for them. Rabbits also?

Welcome to BYC!

Alfalfa is great for chickens as it contains high proteins, lots of minerals and calcium as well. I feed my chickens 2nd and 3rd cuttings that are dry and baled. I do know that some alfalfa is too much for them early in the season. We could never feed our horses first cuttings that were not dry as it was way too high in protein. It is probably safe for your birds in small quantities, but you might want to post this question in our Feeding your Flock section for more help with this....

Better safe than sorry. Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours!

From experience I can tell you that a chicken will not eat something that will hurt itself unless it is starved of any other source of food. Alfalfa is very good for chickens.
