Is her first egg good?

About a week ago I found a Coturnix Quail in my backyard. I heard a bird make a distressing kind of sound and fly away toward my house when I went down the hill to my lower garden area. When I came back to the house I found my dog had something cornered under a woodpile. I put my dog away and not too long after that an unknown bird came out of the woodpile and was standing not too far from me. I stopped what I was doing and knelt down and the little bird seemed to approach me. I reached out and picked her up and she didn't try to run away. I thought she might have been a baby chicken since I had never seen a bird like her that I could remember and thought she was an Aracauna chick.

She was apparently hurt and at first refused to eat and would only drink water. It was strange because he would only start eating food if I put it on a stick (chopstick) and then she would peck at it. Once she started eating, she became much better. She was very dehydrated. There were two new hawks in our area and they swooped down as my dog had her cornered so I think she might have been being chased by the new hawks. She had diarrhea after I made the mistake to take her outside and be in a cage next to the grass and dirt. I have had her inside since then and gave her antibiotics and then went to the feed store and got her food. I couldn't resist the baby arachana chicks and brought two of them home, too, and now they are all in my kitchen.

Now one week later she laid an egg. It was very spotted and I washed it off but now wonder what to do with the egg. I think she might have been someone's pet (possibly neighbors raising quail for meat- sigh- I'm vegetarian) so I was very thankful to see tonight that I don't have to get a license to save her from either being eaten by the hawks or my neighbors.

Is there any chance that the egg she laid today is fertile? I don't know what to do with the egg or any other eggs. How long will a quail lay a fertile egg is they are away from the males? I don't know if I should try to incubate the egg or give it to her to set on or whether they are OK to use. Since she's still on antibiotics I don't think I should use them but I don't know if they might be fertile. It seems like not, since she's been away from any other quails for a week but I want to be sure. Can you please help me know what to do with her eggs.

She is a very sweet quail- loves to run around my kitchen and even stays there with me after she has flown around a little in the kitchen to stretch her wings. I was pleased to see your site tonight and am thankful for the information so far provided. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Today when I put one of the Aracana chicks next to her, I realized she could not be a chicken and when I saw the egg tonight I realized she for sure must have been a quail but I didn't know which type until I looked on your site.

Thanks- Carla

Chickens and quail should be kept separate from each other and you should wash your hands between handling. Chickens often carry diseases they are resistant to but are fatal to quail. Most poultry diseases cannot be tested for vaccinated against or cured.
