I've been a chicken 'addict' for 8 years now and i thought i was told or read here that EEs do not go broody.
i have had hundreds of Easter Eggers and never did one go broody - until now.
Ginger and her lifelong 'buddy' Saltwater Taffy - a pair of EEs i purchased as adult birds 4 years ago from my 'feed store' guy - are inseperable - only socialize with each other and ignore all the other chickens in our flock.
i have had several surguries this summer and doctors advised i cannot care for my chickens until they say it's ok so DH who does not like chickens has been taking care of them for me.
he told me one was broody and sitting a clutch of eggs in the nestbox but he didn't know what breed she was and couldn't describe her as he's not a 'chicken person'.
he came in last friday evening after watering the flock and told me that at least 5 of the chicks had hatched out.
i couldn't stand the suspense so i went out to the chicken house yesterday and lo and behold - the 'broody' was my EE, Ginger.
she is now mothering them very attentively along with my favorite oldest Rooster, Napoleon, a huge Black Cochin ( i have two new girlfriends for him in the room next door in the chicken house that i've been growing out since day old - two Cochin Pullets - a Blue and a Black. they have both grown into magnificent feather-legged ladies and are now 20 weeks of age ).
it is soooooo cute - her 'buddy', Saltwater Taffy the EE keeps very close to Ginger and the chicks but does not bother the chicks - just seems to want to be a part of the whole process.
i just thought i would share this experience with you all and get your feedback on whether or not this is unusual.
i haven't posted for quite a while - nice to be back - i've learned so much here on this forum.
