my neighbor had 14 chicks about 6 1/2 weeks old and she's having a hard time figuring out which are hens and which are roosters. there are 2 that she knows for sure are roosters.. but there are some where neither her or I can figure it out... is this going to be difficult to distinguish where they are mixed? she got them from a local daycare who hatches chicks for the kids for educational stuff. they borrow a rooster or two from a friend, so all the chicken breeds are mixed....

Combing out etc varies breed to breed yes?
the rounding of the feathers etc, breed to breed?
feathering out quicker slower, is that breed to breed or is that a general one?

what else should we be looking for?

Thank you!

Crowing and fighting- when they get old enough, that will give them away.

In about 2 more weeks the males should be somewhat larger in size with larger combs and wattles. They are normally taller and more erect than the females, which will start to "fill out" down below instead.

But all of that is still a ways off. Watch them for crowing and fighting - you should be able to tell.

Have patience - it wont be long.
