Is it just my bad luck?

Is it just my bad luck, or do most fertilized eggs become roosters?

we have hatched out 14 eggs in the past year
and only 4, maybe 5, have been pullets.
And this is 2 different roosters.

I am about ready to never hatch eggs again...
but man I love having chicks around!

what a dilemma!

I think I read on here it's a 50/50 split. I guess I was lucky, my last hatch I had 16 pullets and 5 cocks. I just put an ad in the paper and give them away. Keep trying you should get better, I think maybe after 5 more times.

we have such a hard time parting with the roosters..
because they are always so friendly.

Maybe this spring, if my Cochin
goes broosy..um I mean BROODY again, will try more eggs. At least having purebred
d'Uccle chicks should be easier to sell than mutt chicks. I hope!

I just last Saturday took some silkies to an auction and got $1.50 each.

I tried not to get close to them, the rooster's. They were RIR's and so nice but I gave them to the same people I gave my first roos to and I know they can't won't them so they went to a good home. Good luck.

lol.. broosy... is that a cross between broody and bossy?? sounds like a great momma hen...

i think i got your share of the girls..... i'm afraid to push my luck with hatching... i've gotten all day old chicks from the feed store and out of 17 chickens, only 2 roos.. 1 lf EE, and 1 MFD banty.. 1 for each coop.. lol..

granted, i got 3 baby ducks.. and they're all boys.. lol..

broosy! lol.. I usually catch that typo!

She is one tough broody.
She'd stay broody for as long as I kept eggs under her!

The chicks are going to go out to the chicken shed next week.
UNLESS someone in the bunch decides to find their vocal chords before then.

i've just checked my chicks flock, i set 29 eggs, 9 hatched, 1 died so 8 left and 6 are pullet when 2 are roos and since i put them near my bedroom i always have crower group each morning.

roo is good but perhaps we *hate* it cause we will have to split them to prevent fighting. don't think to give up hatching due to roo result. what's wrong with roo? we can have our kitchen works then.

I havent got enough ROOM to have all roosters. I don't have a barn, just a small shed for a coop. One cannot have a flock that consists of 1/3 roosters.. my hens would pay the price big time. And I have maxed out on how many chickens that I can house.
