Is it normal for chickens to go inside their coop during the day?

This morning I let them all out at 5:30 a.m., they raced out and ran to their food like always. When I went out at 7:00 to give them frozen water bottles and grapes for the day (we are having a heat wave : ( ) they were all in the coop. They all walked out when I came out but I wonder why? They weren't clucking or anything and didn't seem skittish like something scared them and they ran for safety. Unlike last weekend . . . . see next paragraph!

On Sunday, our neighbor was having a 3rd birthday party, and at 1:00 p.m. I noticed they were all in their house. I thought they didn't like all the screaming that was going on in the next yard and frankly, neither did I! Did they feel threatened by the little banshees running around screaming their heads off like . . . well, 3 yr olds??

One other behavior question - when it gets dark at 5:00 in the winter, will they go to bed at 5:00? If so, I will only see them in the mornings on weekdays.

Temperatures were uncomfortable here in NJ early in the morning. I would guess that is why they were in their coop. They may well have been bothered by the antics of your neighbors at their party. They will adjust their 'go to bed' time as the day length shortens.

my girls will not come out of the coop untill about 4pm and early in the am by 9am there back in so i lock it up and put the sheet over so the cooler air stays inside when its out they go where they are most coooler
