Is it okay to have hay under new chick?

Cage within the chicken house with mom and 1 three day old chick. Is it okay to have hay on the floor of cage? Will it hurt the chick's legs to walk on uneven surface? Had cage to transition from broody box into cage. Can I now place cage on floor so that mom can ocassionally get out to stretch her legs? As you can tell I am new to this and want to give best care to momma hen and baby. Thanks, Leslie

Hi, I'm new to this too..my hen just hatched 5 chicks, they are 4,3+2 days old. I have straw and pine shavings mixed together. Their water and feed are on a flat board on top of the bedding (so they don't get stuff into it). They are doing great...so funny to watch. Harriet is a great mom. Hope this helps, it's hard being a newbie, but this site is great and I've learned so much already.
