Last weekend I purchased 6 black sex-link pullet chicks from a neighbor, and she threw in a free buff orp that she wasn't sure of gender. She was thinking maybe pullet, but now I'm starting to wonder. She/he is approx 6 weeks old. Sorry the pics aren't great, but *it* runs from the camera (and me) if I try to open the run.

I have buff orps and i cant remember how big and the comb color of them at 6 weeks... but i guess it varies like all breeds and the individual birds.

could you get an even better pic of him not pecking at the ground and standing?

Actually, she said I could bring him back if it was a roo. I can't keep a roo where I live, but he's been "protecting" the smaller chicks. I wonder if I could keep him just a few weeks until they're a little bigger since he's obviously not crowing yet.

Americana-chick - I tried to get a better pic, but he's not very cooperative.

That's another reason I've wondered if he was a roo...he's mean already!

My BO Pullet was VERY protective of the other chicks from the very beginning...and had a large comb...but she's a she...I would hold out a bit yet...

Roo....for sure.

I have a 16 week old buff orp that I STILL don't know if it's a roo or hen, but I do know that even now mine's comb is not that big. The dang thing's comb is bright red (albeit small....but it makes you wonder) and it has a horrible bossy additude

Okay, since we thought this one was a roo, and it was bigger and slightly agressive toward all of my other chicks, we took it back to the seller. I replaced it with 3 (don't ask me why I needed 3 to replace 1) easter egger pullets. She was selling them as Aracaunas, but they are definitely EEs. I'll get pics and post them in the raising chicks section later.
