I really need help, my buff orpington is now about 5 weeks old and her comb is already coming in quite a bit. Its not turning red or pink at all yet, but thier are about 4 very clearly defined bumps along her head. I can't upload pictures.....is it normal for hens to get thier combs growing in so young, and do Buff orpingtons grow their combs faster than americaunas and brahmas in general? I have one of each of these and thier combs aren't coming in as fast? do you think I have a rooster?

! Happy to have you aboard! Without a pic it is a total guess. It sounds potentially like you roosters but....In my batch of chickens I have two Cuckoo Marans - I was positive that as chicks one was a rooster - "he" had a comb very early and it got bigger and redder with age. The other has almost no comb at all even as an adult. Both are productive hens. I guess the lesson is that it toughs to go with the comb alone. Are there other characteristics? Does it seem larger than the others? Large feet?

I agree, without pictures it is difficult to say. As chicks you can see their combs even if they are hens, and some do grow faster than others. Good luck!

I'd wait a few weeks and then post clear, closeup pictures of comb(front view) and profile of chick, on the "what gender of breed" is this thread

Thank you all so much! I love backyard chickens! I just figured out how to post pics, so here are some pics of her..... She is still a little smaller than my Americana and my brahma. She will be 5 weeks in 3 days
