Hi all,
I am brand new to keeping chickens, and bought 5 1-2 year old hens from some one.
We built an 8' x 4' run that has an attached coop that is about 4' x 3'. The run is slanted, 6' on front, 4' on back side where the coop is attached.
I let them out everyday from about 4PM-Dark, about 8PM.
Since they get out for a few hours a day, is my setup to small for 5 hens? Then seem happy and laying good.

Coop 4 square feet per bird minimum
Run 10 square feet per bird minimum

I have read that many places...is that taken into consideration they are free range for some part of the day everyday?

If it's working for you, your flock, and your climate, then don't change it. But be warned, if you want to add any new birds to the flock, you are going to need something much larger.

The birds will be ok. You will have to clean their coop more often to keep them healthy, and their eggs safe for human consumption.
