We have a Black Jersey Giant roo. We would like to have our 6 yo son show him the SC state fair in Oct 2008. How do I know if he's show material? He will be one year old by then. He has a few marks/scars on his comb. Of course, we think he is the MOST handsome rooster ever but we're partial...

Yes, post a pic. Also try looking up pictures of JG roos that have placed well, and note the differences. Or, get your hands on a standard of perfection (if there is a JG club online they will probably have it posted)

Here is our guy. His name is Turbo. As you can see, he crows a lot.

Whatdya think?

I was comparing him to the APA Standard of Perfection for the Black Jersey Giant. Here are a few things to look for:

He should be around 13 lbs. His comb should have 6 well-defined and evenly serrated points (couldn't really tell from the pics). His plumage should be greenish black with no white feathers. From what I can see he carries his tail around the 45 degree angle, and his sickle feathers look good. Since he is crowing and standing tall, I can't tell but his back should be long, broad and nearly horizontal with a short sweep to his tail.

There are a lot of requirements in order to be judged by the Standard of Perfection.

I am no expert, (my son is just getting into showing chickens for 4-H) but I think he is very handsome, too. I think it would be a great experience for your son to show him at the fair, even if he doesn't win 1st place. (I'm thinking about the marks/scars on his comb). I say go for it! Your son will have a lot of fun.
