Hi, I'm new to chicken raising and didn't notice this until I expanded my flock earlier this year with some day olds. Two chickens came with the house we live in right now and I noticed that my roo is starting to lose it's tail feathers and some neck feathers. Could he be molting and prepping for the colder months ahead? Also, any idea what breed he might be? I think it's maybe a production/rir?

He's an old bird, at least more than 4 years old. Thanks!

Yes, looks like he's molting. The neck and tail feathers are usually the first feathers lost, at least in my experience. He does not appear to be a production Rhode Island Red; just a random mix of breeds.
